About Dr. Jill Marsh

Dr. Jill Marsh is a passionate Family Medicine physician, board-certified in Family Medicine and Geriatrics. A native Texan, she attended the University of Virginia, earning a B.A. in Spanish and Religious Studies. She returned to San Antonio for medical school, completed a Family Medicine residency at UNC-Chapel Hill in 2013, and a Geriatrics fellowship at Duke in 2014. While geriatrics has been a long-standing love for her, she truly enjoys caring for the full-scope of Family Medicine patients – from pregnant women to children, adolescents, adults, and older adults. She is comfortable providing a broad range of preventive services, managing acute and chronic diseases, and performing various office-based procedures – including skin biopsies, joint injections, pap smears, and IUD and Nexplanon placement, among others. She is also fluent in Spanish and prioritizes cultural connection with each patient.

After moving to Birmingham in 2019, she worked in the UAB Department of Family and Community Medicine for 6 years with amazing colleagues, staff, and of course, patients. Over the years, due to the brokenness of our current healthcare system, she frequently found herself remarking, “this is not sustainable” and made the difficult but exciting decision to leap into the Direct Primary Care world.

In 2025, she created Firefly Family Medicine, which aims to simplify care and bring the practice of Family Medicine back to its original intent – to provide personal, comprehensive, whole-person care, founded on the long-term relationships between doctor and patient, families, and communities.

When she is not at work, her heart and hands are full enjoying time with her husband, two children, friends, church community, and the occasional good book.

Inspiration for Firefly Family Medicine

If you’re curious, why “Firefly,” I’d love to share. From the awkward, four-eyed years of junior high until age 28, I had the most kind, quirky, bright-light, faithful best friend, Sarah Chidgey. For some reason, God decided that 28 years was all we got with her, as she died from an aggressive form of cancer in February 2011. While she endured chemo, radiation, and lots of time in and out of the hospital, she shared incredibly vulnerable, encouraging, and hopeful video blogs that touched thousands of lives all over the world. Her motto and closing at the end of each video was: “Shine Bright, Firefly, Shine Bright!” She once wrote “In the midst of the darkness, the Holy Spirit will shine within me,” and that it gloriously did! We hope to honor Sarah’s legacy by showing God’s love and light in all we do, to all who walk through our doors.

Why “Honor-my-Mama” Pricing?

My grandmother, Mama, was a constant presence and encouragement in my life until she died at the age of 94, in 2020. When I was in medical school, planning to eventually pursue training in Geriatrics, Mama and I figured out that I would complete my training around the time she turned 88. I was going to open a Geriatrics clinic in San Antonio, and she would be my receptionist and help me “take care of all the old people.” While we never got to live out that dream, I want to honor Mama by welcoming patients who have lived to 94 and beyond with a little membership discount. If only she could stop by the clinic with some of her famous potato salad or award-winning cheesecake …
